A Rare 377-Million-Year-Old Tree Fossil Fragment

6 September - TBC

A fragment of a remarkable ancient tree fossil, discovered in the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, is now on display in the Museum's Entrance Hall! This unique lycopsid fossil offers a world-first glimpse into a Devonian desert island ecosystem.

Why is this discovery so important?

🌱 It reveals new insights into the prehistoric landscapes of Torbay, including volcanic islands where trees once thrived.

🌱 This exceptional fossil helps us understand the unique evolution of life on Earth.

🌱 Scientists worldwide, from Exeter to Lille (France), are excited about this find, which could reshape our understanding of the Devonian period.

The Lion King Display

These exhibits in the Holden Gallery celebrate the release of Mufasa: The Lion King in the cinemas and on Disney+. Using our natural history collection, we have created a small display of skulls of animals that can be seen in the Lion King films.

Jane Austen's Letter

29 March - 30 September 2025

This year is the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth. To mark this occasion, we are exhibiting the finest surviving letter written by the author to her sister Cassandra. The original letter is rarely displayed and contains the first known reference to the novel Pride & Prejudice. It can be found in the Old Devon Farmhouse Gallery.
