Welcome to Torquay Museum
Ranked among the finest in South West England, Torquay Museum is a journey of discovery for all ages.
Aliens Invade Museum
Some of the most terrifying aliens ever to stalk our Galaxy have descended upon Torquay Museum for its blockbuster summer exhibition, Alien Invasion, which runs from 1st July until 7th September. It showcases stunning costumes and props from some of the best sci-fi movies and TV series ever made, including Star Wars, Dr Who, Alien, Predator, Robocob, Terminator and many more.
The exhibition will be officially opened at 10.30am on Saturday 4th July by ex-Dr Who girl Anneke Wills, who starred alongside two of the earliest Dr Whos, William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton. Anneke will be accompanied at the launch by a moving, talking Dalek, and two walking Star Wars Storm Troopers and a Darth Vader. Museum visitors who come to the launch dressed as their favourite alien will get into the exhibition free of charge.
Agatha Christie
You can also detect the real life story behind Agatha Christie, the world famous crime writer who was born in Torquay, in a gallery dedicated to her life and work. Or wonder at prehistoric artefacts excavated from nearby Kents Cavern, and then experience the sights and sounds of country living in our reconstructed Devon farmhouse.
Explorers
The Museum's new Explorers Gallery, one of the most modern and creative galleries in Devon, traces the incredible journeys made by Torquay's famous explorers, from the frozen wastes of the Antarctic to the depths of the Brazilian rainforest. You can see fascinating artifacts from across the globe, including objects from ancient Egypt.
Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves
Many of the artifacts from Torquay's famous Kents Cavern prehistoric caves are housed in the Museum. The caves were home to man's ancestors as long as half a million years ago and have yielded some amazing finds, from possible Neanderthal remains to palaeolithic flint tools, woolly mammoth teeth to cave bear skulls.
There’s also a programme of other temporary exhibitions, events, school holiday activities and workshops, which means that there is always something new to see and do at Torquay Museum.
